CHAPTER 9

The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression,

but he will by no means clear the guilty,

visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children,

to the third and the fourth generation

Numbers 14:18

As the Shantz family walked toward the Millers’ haus for the Sunday gathering, Stephen Williams called Hazel aside.

“What is it, Stephen?” she snapped.

“I thought you’d like to know I’ve been to Colin’s house. I’ve helped him and his wife with some house repairs and I took them a considerable amount of food.”

Hazel felt bad for snapping at him. “Stephen, that’s wunderbaar.” She remembered how awful he’d been to Colin when he’d come into the store the other day. Now, he’d made up for his rudeness.

“I thought that would make you happy. I realized that I’ve been a mean and selfish person; you helped me to see that.”

“How are they? Colin and his wife?”

“They’re well. Nancy, Colin’s wife, is getting better.”

“Come along, Hazel.”

Hazel turned to see Miriam and Adam right by her. “Hello, Miriam, I’ll be right there.”

Stephen smiled at her again when Hazel turned back around to look at him. “You go on ahead, I’ll tend to my horse and I’ll be in soon.”

Miriam had waited for her, and Adam had gone ahead into the house.

Miriam grabbed Hazel’s arm. “Words are easy, and he might have been nice to that elderly couple just so he could impress you. All I’m saying to you is to be careful.”

“I don’t like him though, Miriam. Not like that.” Hazel didn’t mean to lie; her lie slipped out of her mouth before she could think of what to say.

“You’ve got your eyes on someone else?” Miriam asked.

Hazel nodded. “I don’t want to say who in case he doesn’t feel the same about me.”

“I’ve got an idea who it is,” Miriam said.

Hazel frowned at her sister. “Do you?”

Miriam nodded. “Jah, I think that I do.”

Hazel whispered, “Can you keep quiet about it, then? I wouldn’t want anyone to know.”

“Jah, I won’t say a thing, but I could do something to help you.”

“Like what?” Hazel giggled.

“Ask you both to dinner.”

They stopped talking when they reached the front door of the house. Their small Amish community had built up to a point where they were now able to hold their gatherings every second Sunday rather than every fourth Sunday. Also, they now had grown enough to have two ministers and a deacon in their district. Bishop John Fair visited once a month, and this Sunday, the Bishop was in attendance.

All the furniture had been moved out of the Miller house to fit in all the long benches for people to sit on. There were close on eighty folk in attendance, and the Millers’ house was small, so everyone was close together.

Hazel noticed that Stephen’s mother was glaring at her from one of the rows in the middle. She nodded at Mrs. Williams and smiled, but Mrs. Williams’ expression did not change. Mrs. Williams curled her upper lip into a snarl, and she turned around.
